About this course

Five days in Dubai for engineers who will specify, build, test or maintain an IEC 61850 substation. The course works through the standard in the order a project does — information model and SCL first, then Sampled Values, MMS reporting and control, GOOSE, and finally the system engineering process that ties them together. Nearly half of the 33.4 taught hours are spent at the equipment: configuring merging units and protection IEDs, building GOOSE schemes and measuring what they actually do with an IEC 61850 test set. Taught by Tekvel engineers, including a member of IEC TC 57 WG10 — the working group that maintains the standard. KHDA-permitted.

Is this training for you?

Who it is for

  • Protection and control engineers moving from hardwired schemes to IEC 61850
  • Substation design engineers who write and review IEC 61850 specifications
  • Commissioning and testing engineers who will prove these systems on site
  • SCADA, telecom and IT engineers responsible for substation networks
  • Asset owners and consultants evaluating digital substation projects

What you should already know

  • A working knowledge of substation protection, automation and control schemes
  • No prior IEC 61850 experience: the standard is built up from first principles

What you will be able to do

  • Read an IEC 61850 information model and map a protection or measurement function onto logical nodes and data objects
  • Write, read and validate SCL files, and tell ICD, IID, CID, SSD and SCD apart by what each is for
  • Configure and troubleshoot GOOSE and Sampled Values, including quality attributes and time synchronisation
  • Set up buffered and unbuffered reporting, logs, control models and setting groups over MMS
  • Run the engineering process end to end, from SSD through SCD to configured IEDs, and generate documentation from the SCD

Why this training

  • Taught by members of IEC TC 57 WG10 — The working group that maintains IEC 61850, so answers come from the standard itself rather than a vendor manual.
  • Nearly half the hours are hands-on — 15.8 of the 33.4 taught hours are spent at real merging units, protection IEDs and test sets — not a demonstration you watch.
  • Built on the standard, not on one vendor toolchain — The agenda names IEC documents and file types, never a product, so what you learn transfers to whatever is in your substation.
  • Covers Edition 2 and 2.1 — Model extensions, supervision of GOOSE and Sampled Values, and the testing features the later editions introduced. Tekvel has trained more than 3,500 engineers since 2012

Trainers

Alexey Anoshin — Founder and CEO of Tekvel · IEC 61850 and digital substation trainer

Founder and CEO of Tekvel · IEC 61850 and digital substation trainer Alex has spent over 15 years working on IEC 61850 and protection, automation and control (PAC) systems — as an engineer, product developer, consultant and educator. He founded Tekvel in 2012 and has since trained more than 3,500 engineers worldwide through hands-on and theoretical programs on IEC 61850 and digital substation technologies. His training draws directly on real project experience. At Tekvel he led the development of Tekvel Park, a communication monitoring and diagnostics system for digital substations, and Tekvel Magic, a simulation tool that brings CI/CD principles to the routine testing and maintenance of PAC systems. He has delivered multiple IEC 61850 engineering projects, including the commissioning of a fully centralized, server-based protection and control system for a utility. Before Tekvel, Alex established a multi-vendor Digital Substation Laboratory at Moscow Power Engineering Institute, where he taught protective relaying reliability and ran practical lab courses, and helped bring an RTDS real-time simulator into research and protection scheme validation. Earlier roles at Profotech and Tavrida Electric involved introducing fiber-optic instrument transformers and new medium-voltage switchgear to the market, and he co-founded Releyshik, a magazine for PAC engineers. Alex is a member of CIGRE and IEC TC 57 WG10, the working group that maintains the IEC 61850 standard, and has presented papers at CIGRE SC B5. He holds MSc and BTech degrees in Electrical Engineering from Moscow Power Engineering Institute and is certified in RTDS Simulator Levels I and II. He teaches in English and Russian.

Alexander Golovin — CTO

Alexander Golovin has graduated with Master's degree at Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Technical University) in 2008 (Protection, control and automation department). Since that time he has been involved in the development of products and solutions for digital substations as well as in the implementation of digital substations. He worked as a head of engineering department and then as a chief technical officer at Profotech where he was responsible for the development of fiber-optic current and electronic voltage sensors. Since 2012 he is a co-founder and chief technical officer for Tekvel Ltd., based in Dubai, UAE. Alexander is involved in the development of software and hardware solutions for digital substations, is participating in the implementations of digital substations with process bus (with more than 40 projects implemented for the last 3 years). He has also been providing training on IEC 61850 within Tekvel team since 2012 with more than 2500 engineers trained around the globe. Alexander Golovin is a member of the Working Group 10 of International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Committee 57, which is responsible for development and maintenance of IEC 61850 standard.
